How to Record a Google Meet (With or Without Google Workspace)
Short answer: Google Meet has its own record button, but only on paid plans: most Google Workspace editions and Google One plans with 2 TB of storage or more. With a free Gmail account you need another way. The simplest is a browser extension that records the meeting tab, such as the free GGlot Meeting Recorder, which also gives you a transcript with speaker labels. A screen recorder works too, but you then have to upload the file to get it transcribed.
This guide explains each method, who can use it, and what you get at the end.
Method 1: The record button in Google Meet (paid plans only)
Google lists the accounts that can record in its help article Record a video meeting. In short:
- Google Workspace editions such as Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise, Essentials and Workspace Individual, plus some Education licenses.
- Google One subscribers with 2 TB of storage or more.
- In a Workspace organization, an administrator must turn recording on.

- Join the meeting on a computer (Google also allows Android devices).
- At the bottom right, click Meeting tools, then Recording.
- Click Start recording, then Start. Meet shows everyone that the meeting is being recorded.
- Click Stop recording when you are done.
The video is saved to the organizer’s Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder. If you also want a written transcript, you can upload that file to GGlot meeting transcription.
Method 2: Record Google Meet without Workspace, with the GGlot extension
The GGlot Meeting Recorder is a free Chrome extension. It records the Google Meet tab you have open and your microphone, in your own browser. No bot joins the call, and it works with any Google account, including a free Gmail account.
- Add the extension from the Chrome Web Store and connect it to your free or paid GGlot account.
- Join your meeting on meet.google.com, click the GGlot icon and press Start. Choose the meeting language first.
- Press Stop, or just leave the meeting. The recording is saved in My Files and transcribed a few minutes later, with speaker labels.
You can then edit the transcript, translate it into 100+ languages, or export it as TXT, DOCX, PDF or subtitles. On the free plan each recording can be up to 30 minutes; paid plans record meetings of up to 60, 120 or 240 minutes. The transcript is not live: it is ready shortly after the meeting ends.
The extension works in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, version 116 or newer, on a computer. See how the Google Meet recorder works.
Method 3: A screen recorder
Any screen recorder that captures system sound can record a Meet call:
- Windows: the Xbox Game Bar (Windows key + G) records the active window.
- Mac: the Screenshot toolbar (Shift + Command + 5) records the screen, but on its own it does not capture the sound of other apps; you need an extra audio tool for that.
- Any system: OBS Studio is free and records the screen and system sound.
Screen recordings are large video files and have no transcript. To get the text, upload the file to GGlot after the meeting.
Method 4: Transcripts and notes from Google (paid plans only)
Some paid Workspace editions can also create a Google Docs transcript of the meeting or take notes with Gemini. Google explains which editions and languages are supported in Use transcripts with Google Meet. These give you text, not a recording you can share with people outside the meeting.

Is it legal to record a Google Meet?
Recording rules depend on where you and the other participants are. Some places require the consent of everyone in the conversation. The safe habit is simple: tell all participants at the start that you are recording, and stop if someone objects. This is especially important with an extension or a screen recorder, because Google Meet does not show a notice for them. This article is not legal advice.
សំណួរដែលគេសួរញឹកញាប់។
Can I record a Google Meet with a free Gmail account?
Not with the record button in Meet. Use a browser extension such as the GGlot Meeting Recorder, or a screen recorder.
Can I record a Google Meet if I am not the host?
With Meet’s own button, it depends on your plan and the host’s settings. An extension or a screen recorder records what your own browser plays, so it works as a participant too. Ask the host and the participants first.
Can I record a Google Meet on my phone?
Google allows recording on a computer or an Android device, with a plan that includes recording. Chrome extensions do not run on phones, so to use the GGlot Meeting Recorder, join from a computer.
Where does the recording go?
Meet’s own recordings go to the organizer’s Google Drive. GGlot recordings go to My Files in your GGlot account, next to their transcripts. Screen recordings are saved on your computer.
How do I get a transcript of a Google Meet?
Record it with the GGlot Meeting Recorder and the transcript is made for you, or upload any recording to GGlot Google Meet transcription.
